Please share advice for young women considering or starting a career in print… Which includes design, sales, marketing, and all jobs within.

For Graphic Communication students and graduates … The print industry isn’t fully prepared to welcome you and appreciate the skills you bring to the table, but we are working on it. In the meantime, my best advice is to find a worthy print business in need of your digital media and marketing skills and pitch them on how you can help them grow their offerings and bottom line by hiring you.

Create mock social media ads, snippet videos of cool print executions, write a short post about something the company you want to work with can do. Do your research and use these assets to sell yourself. Offer to work freelance to test out the relationship. If it works out you either have a job or perhaps a growing consulting business of your own!

How have mentors helped your personal and career development?

In crisis or confusion, focusing on curing current symptoms instead of killing the disease is not uncommon. Mentors can help you see beyond yourself and the symptoms that temporarily cloud your emotions and judgment.

I have had mentors throughout my career and they have all reminded me of what I needed to learn the most at that point in time. I think it’s very important to listen to the people who come into your life and offer help, carefully. They may not always say things you want to hear or focus on the problem you believe you are having, but this is truly where big-picture, lifetime learning comes in.
