What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?
Empowerment to me means the availability of opportunities with no predetermined set of obstacles. As a woman in printing, I know the females have as much ink in their blood as their male counterparts. To empower women in printing, you need only give them the unbridled and unrestricted access to success that should be available to all humans. Then, we will simply show you what we are made of. That is empowerment: the equal space to shine!
Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?
As a woman in printing, I truly felt empowered when Friesens hired me. I came from a much smaller printing company in Nashville and the vibe there was decidedly male toxicity. When my male boss at Friesens brought me aboard, he chose me over a male applicant. He also respected my autonomy and opinions. My boss (props to Scott Sinnett) has given me all the air, freedom and opportunity I need to succeed. That has in turn empowered us to make amazing changes and development through publishing partnerships that benefit Friesens. Rising tides raise all ships. If you let individual stars shine, the whole sky becomes brighter!
What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?
The first resources and programs that have helped me grow are the places that I volunteer and put my faith into action. I have been involved with many Christian charities and nonprofits over the years. Giving back helps me grow in not just my career, but every facet of my life and humanity.
I have also greatly benefited from the LinkedIn community of women in my industry through the Girls Who Print group (now nonprofit). Having a community of females striving toward common goals is invaluable.
I would also recommend getting involved in the organizations of the industries that your printing entity services. I am a member of Independent Book Publishers Association, Evangelical and Protestant Christian Publishing Association, and Outdoor Writers Association America. Many of the publishers I represent are members of these associations. Within these publishing organizations (and several museums, as well), I exhibit, sponsor events, host workshops, and serve on planning committees. There, I am allowed to support my clients’ industries/events and network with new prospects.
