What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?
Empowerment, to me as a woman in the printing industry, means having the confidence, resources, and opportunities to excel in a traditionally male-dominated field. It’s about breaking stereotypes, leveraging my 6 years of experience in print and direct mail to innovate, lead, and inspire others. Empowerment is also about having a voice—whether it’s in decision-making, problem-solving, or advocating for diversity and inclusion within the industry. It’s the ability to take ownership of my work, continuously learn and grow, and contribute meaningfully to the evolution of print and direct mail in a digital age. Ultimately, empowerment is about creating a space where women feel valued, supported, and capable of achieving their full potential in this dynamic industry.
Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?
A moment in my career when I felt truly empowered was during a Non-profit direct mail project where I collaborated with other women in executive roles—a rarity in the printing industry. Our team was tasked with redesigning a major client’s direct mail campaign to expand donor contributions. What stood out was the level of communication, understanding, and collaboration among us. There was an unspoken mutual respect and a shared drive to succeed, which created a supportive environment where everyone’s ideas were valued.
I remember leading a brainstorming session where we openly discussed challenges and innovative solutions. The women in the room brought diverse perspectives, and their willingness to listen and build on each other’s ideas was inspiring. When the campaign launched successfully and exceeded the client’s expectations, it wasn’t just a professional win—it was a testament to the power of women lifting each other in spaces where we are often underrepresented. That experience reinforced my belief in the importance of fostering inclusive environments where women can thrive, lead, and empower one another.
What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?
Here are key resources and programs I recommend for young women to grow in their careers, especially in male-dominated fields like printing:
- Professional Networks: Join groups like Girls Who Print and other women’s groups and Lean In Circles for mentorship and networking.
- Mentorship: Seek mentors within or outside your organization for guidance and support.
- Skill-Building: Use platforms like LinkedIn Learning or Coursera to stay ahead in industry trends and tools.
- Leadership Programs: Enroll in programs like Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) or Women’s Leadership Institutes to build confidence and strategic skills.
- Industry Events: Attend conferences of all sizes to network and stay updated.
- Books & Podcasts: Read Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg or listen to Women at Work for inspiration and advice.
- Internal Advocacy: Engage with company diversity initiatives or employee resource groups (ERGs) for leadership opportunities.
Empowerment comes from leveraging these resources, building a support system, and taking ownership of your growth.
