What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?
Empowerment, to me as a woman in the printing industry, means having the ability to make decisions, lead change, and drive innovation within a traditionally male-dominated field. It’s about using my voice and position to influence the industry positively, ensuring that other women have opportunities for growth and recognition. I’m incredibly grateful for the path that my predecessors have paved. Their efforts have significantly reduced the barriers, allowing me to operate without the same level of challenges they experienced. Empowerment is also about fostering a workplace culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. It means being a role model, showing that women can lead successfully and make significant impacts, and helping to pave the way for future generations of women and men in printing and beyond.
Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?
I’ve honestly always felt empowered in my career. Sure, I’ve faced many obstacles along the way, but I believe I can overcome anything and that a “no” is just the first step in the process to a “yes.” I work for my family business and I’m the first female president in three generations. The cool thing is, my brother and I make an excellent team. It’s even more special because he bears the family name, (Walt Gutowski III) yet I’m the face of the company. There are so many things I want to achieve in this one wild life I get to live, and I’m determined to work hard to get there. This attitude has really propelled me to where I am today. I feel empowered because it’s not really about me—it’s about our team. I know our team is the most capable there is, and together we go far!
What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?
Oh, I love professional development books! My journey with them began in 2009 when I was invited to a Chick-fil-A satellite conference and received a John Maxwell leadership book—I was instantly hooked. My latest favorite is Mel Robbins’ The Let Them Theory. I also believe in joining community groups, such as the local business districts, and engaging in activities outside of your career, like taking classes or pursuing hobbies. For me, I sing in a band and am an elected official for my Township. Interestingly, some of the best lessons I’ve learned about leadership came from coaching youth soccer teams. Kids can outwit you in the best ways and really highlight the weaknesses in your leadership style.
