What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?

Empowerment (to me) means having the confidence and resources to make meaningful contributions and drive positive change within my company and for my clients. Empowered women knock down barriers, advocate for equal opportunities, and to quote the Broadway Musical Hamilton, are “in the room where it happens.”

Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?

I recently was successful at advocating for a job promotion and change within my company. Although my title remained the same, I transitioned from the training to the sales department – where I received a raise and can now collect commissions for product demonstrations and trainings. During my discussions with my company, I presented a detailed list of everything I cover and everything I know, highlighting the unique skills and knowledge I possess that no one else in the company has. That long list demonstrated my value and contributions comprehensively.

By confidently showcasing my expertise and value, I was able to secure the promotion! This experience reinforced the importance of self-advocacy and the power of clearly communicating one’s value. It was a defining moment that empowered me to continue striving for excellence and to mentor others in advocating for their career growth.

What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?

Networking: It’s all about who you know. Network within your company and externally through professional associations, like GWP, or at networking events. Building strong professional relationships can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable support.

Staying Informed: Keep up to date on what is happening in the industry. This industry is ever evolving, so it’s important to watch manufacturer webinars, attend trade shows, and network with those in the know. Staying informed helps you stay ahead of trends and innovations.

Continuous Learning: Continuous learning is critical. You may never know it all, but you can at least have an educated conversation on specific topics related to your field. Manufacturers often offer courses and certifications on their products. Utilizing platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and others are also fabulous resources that you can work with on your own time.

Mentorships: Whether you have a formal mentor or a favorite go-to coworker, bouncing ideas off another person or asking for advice can make a huge difference in your career. Mentorship provides guidance, support, and valuable insights.

Books and Podcasts: Reading or listening to information on personal development will help you grow your mindset to get where you want to be. My GWP Mentor (Michelle Dotinga) and I recently read “Likeable Badass” by Alison Fragale, which had some great insights on how to hone the skills of being likeable but still assertive.

AI Tools: Using Microsoft Copilot or other AI tools can streamline your day, help with tone in emails, and assist with various tasks. These tools can enhance productivity and ensure effective communication. (EX: Copilot, please make my answers to the Girls Who Print questionnaire sound professional! )
