What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?
Empowerment, to me, is about having the confidence, knowledge, and support to navigate an industry that, for a long time, didn’t expect to see many women in leadership roles. It’s about having a seat at the table (or the press check!) and knowing that my expertise is valued. In printing, empowerment also comes from mastering the technical side—understanding the details of substrates, color, and production—so that I can walk into any conversation and speak with authority. But just as importantly, it’s about helping others rise. When I can share what I’ve learned and help another woman find her footing in this industry, that’s empowerment in action.
Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?
One moment that stands out is early in my career when I was helping design firms select the perfect paper for their print projects. I had one meeting where a well-known designer walked in with his team, clearly assuming I was just there to take notes. I let him finish his thoughts, then proceeded to walk him through the exact paper stocks, coatings, and finishing processes that would best bring his vision to life—down to how the ink would interact with the sheet. By the end of the meeting, he was taking my notes. That moment reinforced that knowledge is power, and when you deeply understand your craft, you command respect.
What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?
For me, growth has come less from formal mentorship and more from trusted alliances—building relationships with people in the industry, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other. The printing and packaging industries thrive on connection, and some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned have come from those informal but powerful exchanges.
That said, there are great organizations that provide resources for women in print and packaging. The women’s subgroups in other industry associations all offer networking, education, and support. I’m also WBENC-certified, and their programs have been valuable in expanding opportunities and connecting with other women-owned businesses.
Take action! Seek out the programs, communities, and conversations that align with your goals. Don’t wait for opportunities to find you—go after them. Whether it’s attending industry events, joining a professional group, or simply reaching out to someone whose work you admire, every step you take builds your foundation for success.
