What does empowerment mean to you as a woman in printing?
I’ve been in the print industry for 19 years, and empowerment as a woman now means being capable of successfully achieving all aspects of a print job so the client is happy with the final product. Whether it’s troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, calling support, file and color corrections, communicating with the team, and ensuring the project meets the deadline is empowering. Knowing I can achieve all goals to make every aspect of the job complete with a happy client is rewarding.
Can you share a moment in your career when you felt truly empowered?
I began having numerous clients call and ask for me directly to place orders. They told me I was trusted in exceeding their print expectations, and knew jobs would be delivered by the deadline. I’ve most recently felt truly empowered and honored to take over the Graphic Arts program at FTCC. I’m very fortunate to have worked with experts from around the nation that went above and beyond for training and sharing knowledge, so today I could be where I am in my career.
What resources or programs have helped you grow in your career that you would recommend to young women?
Reaching out to professionals when wanting to know more about a subject. I’ve used LinkedIn as a huge asset as well. Reaching out to other local printers about their equipment and workflows for research was a huge help. Staying educated on the latest technologies for software and hardware is highly important.
I recommend that young women not be afraid or intimidated about making mistakes because we all learn by experience. Ask every question you can think of without worrying if you’ll “bug” someone. The more questions you ask, the more you learn. Don’t be scared about change because change leads to growth!
