I chose print. Had it narrowed down to two choices Printing/Graphic Arts or Ornamental Horticulture. Printing won!
How do you establish credibility with customers, colleagues and bosses?
By being myself. I do my best, to be honest, and genuine. When problems arise, face them head-on. Trying to dodge them creates additional problems. Own up when mistakes are made. Come prepared to offer at least one solution when problems arise. Be knowledgeable about everything you possibly can. Even if that knowledge is simply where to find the answer to what you need to know.
What advice can you offer regarding negotiating salary raises/addressing fair pay issues?
Do your research. Know your worth and what the position is worth. Add value to your company and yourself by taking on responsibilities and expanding your personal value. Make what you do more of an asset to your company and ask to be compensated accordingly.
What advice did you receive early in your career that you wished you had followed?
To leave a situation that wasn’t mutually beneficial. I stayed in a position longer than I should have. The compensation was severely unbalanced with the responsibilities I was given upon starting. I stayed because I knew I was needed. I was told by a client that I should leave because my employer wasn’t treating me fairly. I stayed. My client persisted. I eventually left and got a position with one of the best companies I’ve ever worked for. I was even able to continue working with that same customer although in a different capacity. If I would have taken the advice sooner, I could have eliminated a very stressful part of my career. A business relationship should be give-and-take. If there isn’t that balance, try to equalize it. If that doesn’t work, it’s okay to walk away. Even if they “need” you.
