Please share advice for young women considering or starting a career in print… Which includes design, sales, marketing, and all jobs within.
Print isn’t dead! Go for what you truly enjoy doing despite what others are doing. Yes, design changes (rapidly) and a lot of people choose to go with the hottest specialty area at the moment, BUT if you’re not happy with what’s so-called “happening” at the time, then don’t do it! Take the time to master your craft and people will be drawn to you because you are the expert. Explore, explore, but be okay with choosing the road less traveled.
How have mentors helped your personal and career development?
I didn’t have any graphic design mentors. My mentors came from the printers I worked with within various cities where I managed marketing graphic design. I learned how to correctly set up files, find solutions to make amazing pieces within my budget, and much more. I wouldn’t be where I am without those saleswomen and coordinators at those local printers!
