What do you do?

As the Director of Publishing Operations at Palmetto Publishing, I am at the forefront of ensuring that our authors’ visions come to life with maximum impact on our customers. I oversee every aspect of the publishing journey, from manuscript review to orchestrating cover design, and interior layout, and their distribution and printing. My mission is to not only ensure efficiency and quality but to also connect with our authors on a personal level to understand and, deliver their vision in a timely and impactful manner. This pivotal role demands not only strategic foresight and operational finesse but also a broad comprehension of the publishing and print landscape and its profound impact on our customers’ experiences.

What investments have you made in your professional career development?

I have made significant investments in my professional career development through continuing education and skill enhancement. I enjoy attending industry conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in publishing and printing. Additionally, I try to stay connected with trends and courses related to project management, leadership, and customer service to further strengthen my capabilities in my role as a leader for my team and organization.

What investments have you made in your personal development?

On a personal level, I prioritize personal development by dedicating time to activities such as networking with peers and mentors and engaging in hobbies that foster creativity and critical thinking. I also emphasize maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which includes activities like gardening, cooking, and spending quality time with family and friends.

How can the industry proactively invest in women, and why should this be a priority?

Investing in women isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s essential for our collective success. I’ve seen firsthand the impact of fair pay and leadership opportunities (or the lack of them) in my career journey. When I have the chance to mentor a talented woman on my team and watch her grow into a confident leader, it not only enriches her life but also brings fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to our projects. This also reaches through to our customer base allowing us to better understand, support, and promote our female authors and creators. Supporting women’s education and providing flexible work arrangements have also made a difference in my own life, allowing me to balance my career aspirations with personal responsibilities. Through these experiences, I’ve come to understand the profound importance of investing in women—it’s not just about equality; it’s about unleashing the full potential of individuals and driving meaningful change in our workplaces and communities.

Companies must implement policies and initiatives that promote gender diversity and inclusion. This can include mentorship programs, leadership training specifically tailored for women, flexible work arrangements, and equal pay practices.

Investing in women is a priority for several reasons. Firstly, it promotes diversity of thought and perspective within organizations, leading to better decision-making and innovation. Secondly, it helps address systemic barriers that women face in advancing their careers, ultimately creating a more equitable and supportive work environment. Finally, we should all strive to ensure all individuals have equal opportunities to succeed and thrive in their chosen profession. By investing in women, the print industry can unlock untapped talent and potential, driving long-term growth and success for everyone involved.
