What do you do?

As the Director of Operations in a small shop, I get the privilege of being able to get involved in every part of our customer’s work, as needed. I am responsible for overseeing our customer service, estimating, art, purchasing, order entry, press scheduling, and press approvals, while also running our wide format presses. My role encompasses everything that falls under making our customer’s ideas come to life and getting the final product to them.

I am incredibly lucky to be a part of a company that sees the value of embracing the next generation of printers, especially women. Here I have been allowed to continually grow and take on the leadership role I am in.

What investments have you made in your professional career development?

I invest in my professional career by always seeking to learn more and becoming more involved in my company and industry. From learning more about how our industry works, to learning the new technology and applications we install in our shop, to joining new groups, I am always looking for more.

I am thrilled to be serving as the Vice Chair of the PICA Emerging Leaders group, to grow my network and our industry as a whole, with an emphasis on more women in print!

What investments have you made in your personal development?

I invest in my personal development by taking time for myself as well as getting involved in my community.

My work life can be demanding, so I take time to relax and keep a work-life balance. I enjoy trying new art, and various crafts, as well as appreciating what others have created through the local art museums.

I love getting involved in my community through volunteering with Raleigh Parks and getting to be a part of a variety of events in my community. I participate in most of our local crafting and holiday events, it is always a rewarding and fun experience helping attendees create crafts and memories.

How can the industry proactively invest in women, and why should this be a priority?

Our industry is making good investments in women, through the Girls Who Print mentorship program, and the voice they give to the women in our industry. Proactively I think this group needs more recognition among print shops and more encouragement for involvement from leadership in print. This group should be emphasized not just among the top women in a company, but for every woman, even ones just getting started, to know they have a place to belong.

My goal through the PICA Emerging Leaders program is to spread our voice among those young women who may be deterred from joining our industry thinking they may be on an island in a male-dominated industry

The importance of young women seeing a diverse group of women throughout our industry can not be understated. The next generation of women in print needs to see we are all here as their voice and community in what can be an overwhelming industry for a woman to join.
