What do you do?

I am actually looking forward to retirement at the end of this school year. I have been teaching print and graphic design for 25 years.

What investments have you made in your professional career development?

I decided to go back to college and get my master’s degree in 2013 and completed in 2015. Also, during the pandemic I had to rework my hands-on curriculum to be all remote learning. I learned how to do this by attending Zoom meetings during the summer prior to coming back to school. It was a rough year, but we got through it.

What investments have you made in your personal development?

During my time teaching printing, I had to give up a lot of control to my students and allow them to make mistakes. It’s a hard thing to do, but it is a must. I have come to grips that I will be leaving the print universe when I retire. Since I don’t have equipment at home to do screen printing, I will be out of the loop. It kind of makes me sad about retiring.

How can the industry proactively invest in women, and why should this be a priority?

I have been proactively teaching female high school students that they can print for a long time now. I’ve had girls running the offset printing press, textile screen printing and poster screen printing. Since I work for a career center, we place students into payed work co-op positions. Almost all of my placements are female because they are focused and dedicated and have an eye for detail.
