LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lmaione/

What do you do?

I am a designer, artist, and educator. At Kansas City Art Institute, I teach courses in the Graphic Design department. As a designer and creative director, I work with clients and project partners through my studio, for instance, a design practice. As an artist, I use printmaking and painting approaches to create works on paper.

What investments have you made in your professional career development?

I invest in my professional career development through continuously learning and activating new technologies and approaches to print media and screen-based media, and the hybridity of our ways of working and connecting allows for new ideas in design spaces. Serve and connect with the community in board roles. As an Asian American woman in the midwest, I am constantly looking for spaces and opportunities to increase the presence of diversity and hybrid perspectives in the design industry, I engage in courses and resources on DEIB and search advocacy in recruitment and retention efforts in and out of academia.

What investments have you made in your personal development?

I am actively building new habits of mind and heart to create a sustainable trajectory of growth and joyful exploration in my work as I move into this next decade.

How can the industry proactively invest in women, and why should this be a priority?

Printing and publishing is a space where the technical eye, the engineering curious, the poetic voice, the precise craft, and the openness to collaboration and communication meet. This is a dynamic and critical constellation for women to take part in and actively build as we move swiftly into a time when many technologies and communications must work together creatively.
