Please share advice for young women considering or starting a career in print… Which includes design, sales, marketing, and all jobs within.

Though I am also just starting my career in print, my advice for a young girl starting her career in this field would be to learn as much as possible and don’t be afraid to ask too many questions. Be yourself and be confident! There is an intimidating amount of information to be taken in but don’t let it worry you. With the right mindset and the right mentors, you’ll be able to learn and retain much more than you realize.

Get hands on experience and shadow everyone you possibly can! Shadowing our pressmen, prepress operators, mail list processors, bindery crew, and territory account managers was the absolute best introduction to the print world. Of course, there is still so much to learn, but I took a lot of notes that I still reference in my position as a Project Leader (CSR).

How have mentors helped your personal and career development?

I am lucky to say that I’ve had many mentors throughout my career. From working in a grocery store in my teens to working in food service management and now in the print industry with Grit, I’ve always had several people that I can go to whenever I needed something. These mentors have taught me not only about the job and company I was working for, but they taught me skills that I’d carry with me for the rest of my career. These skills include but are not limited to, customer service skills, computer skills, problem-solving, and time management.

My mentors have always gone above and beyond to explain things to me to make sure I fully understand something. If I didn’t get it right away, it was something we kept working towards. The mentoring I’ve been receiving at Grit has been exceptional. Coming from the food service industry, I knew nothing about print but was eager change my career and to learn something new. My mentors at Grit have taught me so much to make sure that I was prepared to succeed in the industry.
